The Unlikely Redemption of the Thief Sydney Bridgewater

The second novel of The Moorhouse Trilogy

Sydney Bridgewater has stolen $21 million from five employers over 28 years. She's never been caught, feels no guilt or remorse, but suspects her thievery might soon be uncovered.

Atticus Literary Luminaries 2024 silver medal for fiction

“We are thrilled to announce that you have been named as the Silver Winner under the Fiction Category of the Atticus Literary Luminaries 2024! Your exceptional work, The Unlikely Redemption of the Thief Sydney Bridgewater, has captivated our judges and earned this prestigious accolade.”

Through her attorney Quentin the Quintessential, Sydney Bridgewater offers recompense for her misdeeds, then involves two young people who become close friends to accomplish her vague three-step redemption path: help herself, help a friend, and help someone not her friend.

Sydney’s journey takes her through high-tech car thievery in Arizona, building a deep-search computer operation in London, befriending a bar bully in Galway, stolen jewels at Milan Fashion Week, high-stakes poker in Mississippi, a 17th century Old Masters art forgery in Rotterdam, and a widespread UK money laundering scheme. She executes and completes her plan with great drama, then vanishes, never to be heard from again. For those who enjoy strong female leads, who like fast-moving adventures in many locations, and who like stories with continuing surprises and unanticipated outcomes, The Unlikely Redemption of the Thief Sydney Bridgewater is a quick, satisfying read.

On an inconsequential day of an insignificant month in an unremarkable dead of night, Sydney Bridgewater initiated DefCon2 with three seconds of clicking on her keyboard.

There was no “Are you sure?”

At lightspeed, her command traveled to five computers in five different cities, and her long-secret program code vanished, never to be found, never to return.

As risky as it may turn out to be, she’d decided, it was time to move on.

Praise for The Unlikely Redemption of the Thief Sydney Bridgewater

The second book in The Moorhouse Trilogy, the author explores the journey of Sydney Bridgewater, a thief who has stolen millions of dollars from employers over nearly three decades. After separating herself from her crimes, the thief decides to go on a journey of redemption, looking to use [her] computer skills...to ultimately find redemption. What really sets the book apart is how it engages multiple genres...from heist and crime thriller storytelling to mystery and suspense with a tech spin. The supporting cast of characters perfectly elevated Sydney’s evolution, and the surprise twists and final breakdown of her escapades left an open ending that readers would love to see turn into a sequel. This is a must-read book for armchair sleuths!
— Anthony Avina, Hollywood Book Review
Lowther’s writing is polished, fast-paced and entertaining, much like a Saturday matinee. The work is unique in its genre in that it does not delve deeply into a single plot. Instead, it runs over the surface of multiple storylines with characters who are never seen to be angry, sad, elated, fearful, indecisive, or make mistakes. Readers who want something light and diverting that can be picked up and put down without needing time to reacclimate to a complicated plot should find Lowther’s story a welcome and amusing distraction.
— Mark Heisey, US Review of Books
The Unlikely Redemption of the Thief Sydney Bridgewater by Mic Lowther is a must-read for fans of the thriller and suspense genre. Its combination of a gripping plot, well-developed characters, and a relentless pace makes it a standout book. [The author] clearly has an enormous amount of computer expertise...showcased with sharp, detailed writing about hardware and software, coding, programming, data mining and other computer protocols. Of greater significance, though, in this high-tech narrative is Sydney’s inspiring transformation...a story of personal growth [and] a model of change that can encourage self-reflection in all of us. Whether you’re looking for an edge-of-your-seat adventure or a thought-provoking read about human nature and morality, [this book] delivers on all fronts.
