What Mom & Dad Never Told Us

The concluding novel of The Moorhouse Trilogy

Caroline, David, and Juliana Moorhouse, now in their 50s, look for answers to age-old mysteries. Finding evidence is scarce and very cold. Their efforts stall then lurch forward. It's guesswork at best. Or is it?

“What if her death wasn’t an accident?” Caroline said. “What if it was somehow connected to where she was going or what she was carrying? What if she didn’t really die from the crash but from someone who caused it? No personal belongings found in the car means her purse was missing. That makes everything a bit hard to explain. Shouldn’t that be of interest to us?”

“It should be, and we should definitely be doing something about it,” David said, “even if we’re 40 years too late.”

Mom died in a car accident when the Moorhouse siblings were teenagers. Or did she? Something about what they’ve been told doesn’t seem right. Dad willed them secret hoards of collectibles when he died 10 years ago, among them a 146-page unfinished manuscript. What was so compelling for him to write about? Why did he abandon it?

Caroline, David, and Juliana Moorhouse (now in their 50s) look for answers to these age-old mysteries. Evidence is scarce and very cold. Their efforts stall then lurch forward. It’s guesswork at best. Or is it?

A box of old documents their dad saved offers mind-numbing tedium disguising scattered clues. Some pieces fit together…but do they lead anywhere? And what does selling their fabulously successful family business…and lending millions to other businesses that they can't spend…and creating Monopoly online casino gambling have to do with it?

Maybe nothing. Maybe they're just dead ends. Or maybe they are necessary steps that give time for clues to settle and show the way.

Praise for What Mom & Dad Never Told Us

Lowther’s writing shows the clear signs of an author who has practiced his craft and become proficient in writing clear sentences that work to achieve his intended goal. The siblings have grown throughout the trilogy and are better individuals due to this growth. Each of the books has multiple smaller narratives included, which bring in more characters and help appeal to a wider audience. Overall, Lowther’s professionalism is clear in his writing, and fans of his earlier works will find plenty more to enjoy in this book.

A truly relatable story, the author does a remarkable job of capturing the complex family dynamics that are at play between these characters. Not only does this mystery bring the siblings together, but it shows the ways in which they are able to reconnect with their parents, adding an emotional depth to the writing which will stay with readers. The fast pacing of the story and the imagery found in the author’s writing style allowed these characters to feel real and jump right off the page.

Xander and Janis Moorhouse stand as the novel’s focal points, each shrouded in mystery and complexity. At first, Xander seems like an eccentric troublemaker, taking absurd risks which appear destined for failure. But as the layers of his psyche peel away, the reader uncovers the vibrant and misunderstood depths of Xander Moorhouse – a character far more nuanced than he first appears. In contrast, Janis initially comes across as the quintessential socialite mother. Yet, as her story unravels, she effortlessly steals the spotlight with a past that’s as enigmatic as it is captivating. Bravery, wit, vision, leadership, trustworthiness, and countless other qualities make Mrs. Moorhouse a character to truly cherish in the novel.
